Bertha M Hughes

Bertha Michelle Hughes affectionately known as “Berthday” was born on Saturday, February 17, 1973, in Palatka, Florida, to the late Willie Mae McKenzie and Eddie L. Bailey. She received her early education in the Clermont Public School System in Clermont, Florida. Bertha was lovingly raised in Florida by her grandparents, the late Fannie L. Anderson and the late Isaac McCall, who nurtured and reared her as their own. As a young woman, Bertha met and married the love of her life, Mr. Charles Edward Hughes. Their union was blessed with three beautiful children: Tonay, Kiana, and Arianna. In 1999, Bertha and Charles relocated their family to Cordele, Georgia, where they built a life together and was married for over 30 years. Bertha was a woman of simple joys. Deeply devoted to her family, she found her greatest happiness in spending time with her loved ones especially when cooking and gathering around the table. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, filled with the aromas of love and tradition. As a faithful woman of God, Bertha was a strong believer in the power of prayer. She was a member of New Light International Outreach under the leadership of Apostle Lillie H. Weaver, where she found spiritual growth and community. On Monday, July 21, 2025, Bertha peacefully transitioned to her eternal home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Hughes; her son, Tonay McCall Sr.; and three sisters, Freda McCall, Rosa Ward, and Barbrann Chester. Bertha leaves to cherish her love and memories: three daugthers: Kiana S. Hughes, Ja’Nia L. Hughes, and Arianna M. Hughes, all of Cordele, GA; eight grandchildren: Tonay McCall Jr., Ka’Niyah Hughes, Da’Mario Vinson, Ka’Mere Brown, Kaiden Brown, Ka’Mone Hughes, Ashanti Hughes, and Harmony Hughes; two sisters: Georgia (Kelvin) Stoudemire and Shantae (Lee) Wren; her father-in-law: Robert Charles Houston; her Godson: Cortez Evans; two special cousins: Ansonia Anderson and Jillian Anderson; her best friend: Cynthia Lattimore; a special friend: Michael Smith; a favorite niece: New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and faith.

Celebration of Life will be on Friday August 8, 2025 at 1pm in the sanctuary of New Light International Outreach (1005 N. 10th St., Cordele, GA 31015)
